Chapter Eleven

Another car appeared on the horizon, in the lane the pickup was in now. My hands were shaking as I hit the brakes, skidding to a stop on the shoulder of the road. Charlie grabbed my arm, screaming.

“What are you doing? We’re sitting ducks!”

“Get the plate number! If they don’t get over, they’re going to crash into that car.”

The pickup swerved back into our lane and took off, slipping and sliding on the icy road as its back end fishtailed. The other driver laid on the horn before rolling down their window and giving the pickup a gesture.

They slowed as they got to us and I saw a man in the driver’s seat who looked familiar.

“Are you girls okay? What was wrong with that man?”

“I don’t know,” I said, hands shaking so hard I had to grip the steering wheel again. “He just came up on us. Charlie, did you get the plate?”

She grabbed her phone and nodded.

“I’ve gotta write it down before I forget. It wasn’t a local plate. We’ve got to report this. Do you mind letting the police know what you saw?”

“Absolutely. You girls work out at the resort, don’t you? I’m a cashier at the grocery store.”

That’s why he looked familiar. I relaxed a little and tried to smile.

“We do. Thank you for stopping. He hit the back of my car. I need to check for damage.”

“Let me turn around up there and I can help you look. I have a little experience with cars. Oh, I’m Jeremy.”

“I’m Eden and this is Charlie.”

He rolled up his window and drove forward. Charlie had already called the police department and was giving our location as I turned back to her. I turned off the engine and made sure my hazards were on. There wasn’t a lot of traffic on this road, but the last thing I needed was for someone to ram into my car again. Charlie took the phone away from her ear for a second.

“Was the pickup black or blue? I’m terrible with dark colors.”

“Black with tinted windows. Was that really a gun or was I imagining it?”

“It was a gun. It looked like one of my dad’s rifles. I can’t believe it,” she said, putting the phone back to her ear and relaying the color to the dispatcher. “We’ll sit tight, thank you.”

Jeremy pulled in behind us and I got out, slipping a little on the pavement as I walked to the back of my car. My tail light was broken and a largish dent covered half of the back of my car.

“Are the police coming?”

“Yep,” Charlie shouted out the window. “They’re sending someone from the resort. I guess everyone’s over there. It shouldn’t take long.”

He nodded and let out a whistle as he saw the damage on the car.

“I hope you’ve got insurance. At least no one was injured. What on earth possessed someone to do this? Was it road rage?”

“I don’t know. I was just driving along and they appeared behind me. I’ve never seen that pickup before in my life.
